Demeter Seeds Project

The Demeter Seed Saving Project at UC Santa Cruz is composed of farmers, gardeners, students, and biologists who believe in the importance of preserving the genetic heritage of our food.
Our mission is to preserve the locally adapted organic varieties of heirloom seeds of the Central Coast. We realize the only way to preserve seeds and plants is not only to store the seeds, but also to ensure that all the seeds are planted and grown out on a continual basis. We seek to help small gardeners and mid-sized organic farmers gain access to locally adapted organic varieties. We hope to decrease our community’s reliance on large seed companies and are strongly opposed to the patenting of life by genetic engineering companies.

We should table the Farmer's Market downtown before seed swap events. This would be a good way to get volunteers involved. "Non-profits or organizations wishing to table(distribution of information only/no sales allowed): For the Downtown Santa Cruz Market, tabling is allowed on the back wall, next to Toadal Fitness, without scheduling. Please bring all your own equipment and carry all items into the market."-SC Farmer's Market website
